Improving sustainability and profitability through reducing waste in the seafood supply chain.

Our vision is simple: Sustainable growth from wild-caught seafood. By maximizing the utilization of what is already being caught, we can provide more outputs from wild caught seafood with minimal additional environmental consequences. Net Surplus wants to support the development of a smarter, more efficient food system that supports global population growth without harming the planet—turning yesterday’s by-catch or processing waste into tomorrow’s essential nutrition.

Unlocking the Ocean’s Hidden Value
A 2020 FAO report estimated that 9.1m tonnes (10%) of global wild caught seafood is returned to the sea unwanted. Although this number is often disputed, it gives an idea of the scale of the issue and opportunity.

We are here to change the narrative, turning a market inefficiency into a thriving opportunity that can:

  • Improve the financial welfare of fishers.

  • Offer consumers great value seafood against a backdrop of reducing availability and increasing inflation for key species.

  • Provide society with an additional low environmental impact sources of protein.

  • Deliver new inputs to the aquaculture and the marine ingredients market

Coordinating the difficult fish
There are some great companies out there that are well developed in this area, but they tend to be focused on large scale operations such as aqua-culture or pelagic fishing, which warrant the dedicated resource and necessary investment. We are here to support those that feel more could be done, but don’t have the time or resource to make it happen.
